Seismic Acquisition

High-Resolution Marine

In 2001 Velseis commissioned the Velseis Explorer, an 11 metre catamaran, purpose-built for multichannel airgun recording in very-shallow (< 1m) marine situations. The boat is configured with state-of-the-art marine navigation and recording insrumentation. Quality control is ensured via real-time 3D visualisation.

During 2001 two high-resolution 3D surveys totalling 31 sq km were completed, providing excellent definition of coal targets at several hundred metres depth. Because of the broad bandwidth of the system, it also provides detailed imagery of very shallow subsurface sedimentary structures. This auxiliary information is valuable for static corrections, and for understanding the detailed geology between the surface and target.

This system is also suitable for engineering applications such as pipeline and foundation surveys, offering greater accuracy and definition than conventional, single-channel Sparker systems.
